Solar PV Rooftop Design and Installation
The New Indian Model School, Dubai is one of the premier institutions offering education to the Indian community. The 40-year old institution was exploring possibilities to install the solar rooftop in the school to reduce the carbon footprint as part of sustainability.
With Consistent’s expertise in solar PV design and installation, it was engaged for the Engineering, Procurement and Construction in Block 6. Consistent provided a turnkey solution to the institution, i.e. from the very conceptualization to the completion of the installation.
With Block 6 having a roof area of 14,330 sq. m., power generation for 1st quarter was 23.60 MWh; resulting in operational cost savings of AED 60,000 per annum.
Consistent developed the design and got it approved from DEWA. All authority approvals related to electrical interface, structural suitability were obtained through various Dubai authorities.
Challenges
The primary challenge was the allocation of space for installing the solar panels on the roof without disturbing the existing services. The key information i.e. as-built drawings and authority approved drawings were missing, based on which the complete planning is coordinated.
Team Consistent contacted authorities and obtained the 20-year old data from the Municipality and DEWA. Site conditions were different as compared to the drawings available. A series of discussions with clients and authorities were coordinated in determining the location for the Inverter, DC combiner box and AC combiner box as per Shams Dubai/DEWA DRRG regulations. The cable route from AC combination to meter cabinet needed to be designed without disturbing the existing cables.
And finally, the installation of the system was to be carried out without disturbing the school operations.
Design Approach & Solutions
Team Consistent implemented a design development process using ‘PVSyst’ software simulating the maximum possible energy generation. Structural analysis was carried out for determining the loads. The selection of material was analyzed considering 20 years of operation and sustainability parameters.
Installation of panels was planned in a way to minimize the effects of shadow, while the orientation worked to maximize the yield. The AC-DC ratio was maintained at 1.02%.
Cable route from AC combiner boxes to kWH meter normally runs through the shaft. As the existing shafts have limited space, Team Consistent designed the cable to run through the building elevation with proper containment as per DEWA DRRG regulations. Additionally, the inverter was located near the solar plant to minimize cable losses.
A well-designed system can make a lot of difference in the lifespan of a solar PV system.
Considering DEWA DRRG regulations as the baseline, these solutions were implemented with a view to regulating system performance and payback period.
The Difference We Made
After taking into consideration all the above parameters, Consistent was able to complete the project one month ahead of schedule.
Not only was the performance of the system satisfactory, but in the first quarter, the system generated a yield 7% greater than anticipated, i.e. 23.60 MWh. The anticipated savings in energy bills for the client are around AED 60,000 per annum.
Furthermore, Team Consistent received appreciation from the client, and was engaged for upcoming projects.
